In this article I delve into the idea of choosing an art holiday as the perfect post-pandemic reunion. Now is the perfect time to gather your loved ones for a holiday of self-discovery and connection through the world of art. Join me as I explore the benefits of opting for an art retreat away from the big city and how it can truly be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Why global reunion is a post-pandemic trend

The loss of quality times with family and friends was one of the greatest losses during the pandemic. So it is no surprise that in 2022 people globally were motivated to reconnect. And in 2023 reuniting with loved ones, wellness and food, art holidays and culture still make up up the top reasons for Australians to travel.

Why choose an art-retreat holiday for your reunion?

Of course, a reunion deserves something special, a unique experience that will foster stronger bonds and lasting memories. That’s where an art-retreat holiday comes in.

Reconnect through creativity

Art not only brings people together physically, but socially too, by inspiring reflection and forming connections that transcend differences. Engaging in artistic endeavours alongside your loved ones can create a sense of unity and shared experience that few other activities can match. Whether it’s painting, photography, pottery, writing, or any other art holiday, the process of creation becomes a channel for self-expression and understanding one another at a deeper level.

Creativity is awesome a.k.a. sublime

Being creative can be pretty awesome – it can reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood.  Just see how proud and happy these ladies were at the end of our November 2022 retreat!

Slow travel

Many of us are consumed by our daily business, leaving little time to truly connect with those around us. So, an art holiday retreat provides the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in the present moment. Surrounded by nature or in a serene studio setting, we can fully embrace the experience without distractions, enabling a deeper focus on the creative process and interpersonal connections.

Build lasting memories

From the laughter shared during creative sessions to the moments of reflection, the experiences gained will forge lasting bonds between friends and become cherished memories.

Here are some comments made by Tin Dragon Cottages art retreat participants Google and Tripadvisor reviews)

Maggie said: I certainly have many happy memories to treasure, e.g. Christine’s, Graham’s and James’s hospitality, cooking and friendliness for a start, the lovely decorated cottages (I’ve never had one to myself before – it was so relaxing!) – and the beautiful surroundings.

From Ros, I enjoyed the opportunity to develop our art in a caring and supportive environment. I chose this art retreat because there was a local Tasmanian artist. It’s rare that art retreats in Tasmania feature Tasmanian artists.

Jan said, Thank you I had a great time, the lovely clean and comfortable accommodation and the food.

Helena said, …(The) 3 day drawing workshop wasn’t what I was expecting- it was better! Each drawing/colouring component was different and at times challenging yet rewarding and I admit to coming away from the retreat quite impressed with my efforts and inspired to draw more!

Wendy commented, …This was a comforting catch-up with family and friends at a time when I most needed connection. The creative process helped me focus on the present – very soothing.

Reunion travel benefits communities, too!

Runion travel is a major reason for Australian domestic travel. In fact, last year, nearly a third of travelers to Tasmania stated they were here to visit friends and relatives. So, spending quality time with your loved ones away from the major centres plays an important role in the post-pandemic recovery of rural tourism economies.

Art holiday retreats in rural Tasmania

A quick online search reveals art retreats being hosted throughout the year in almost all regions of Tasmania. So, creative art retreats encourage interstate visitors to visit during Tassie’s off-season  and to disperse across the state. In fact, many tourists attracted to complete an art retreat will continue on to tour more of Tasmania.

Branxholm in North East Tasmania is not just about mountain biking

Of course Derby (and Branxholm) in North East Tasmania is a mountain-biking hot spot! But art tourism can broaden tourism to this region by attracting a different audience.

Graham, Christine and James, owners of Tin Dragon Cottages in Branxholm have hosted several art retreats since the pandemic.

Christine said, Family and friend reunions have made recent retreats extra special! For example; we have seen sisters, mother and daughters and friends reunited to enjoy an immersive art experiences at Tin Dragon Cottages. “Couples” have travelled from across Tasmania, mainland states and New Zealand to catch up with each other.

Graham Cashion said, Although we offer transport for our retreat guests, some arrive in a hire car and others return to Launceston to collect a hire car, or connect with a tour. Guests rarely stay in Tasmania just for the retreat. They are inclined to make the art retreat a part of an extended visit to Tasmania.

Create lasting memories, unforgettable art and boost regional tourism

So, choosing an art-retreat holiday for yourself and your loved one/s is an inspired decision that promises to create lasting memories, strengthen bonds, and ignite the spark of creativity within each of you.

Art travel emphasises meaningful and authentic engagement with your travel destination, local artists and hosts. Furthermore, by staying longer in a regional area, you are promoting concern for the local environment and sustainability in general.

Gather your loved ones, pack your bags for North East Tasmania, and embark on this transformative adventure of reconnecting with art and with each other!
